Carpenter Ants MOST DESTRUCTIVE
Appearance. Large (1/4 to 1/2 inch), black or dark red-black. Workers have a single node between thorax and abdomen.
Danger. They excavate wood to build nests, causing structural damage similar to termites. Unlike termites, they don't eat the wood. They carve smooth galleries through it for nesting.

Pavement Ants
Appearance. Small (1/8 inch), dark brown to black with parallel lines on head and thorax. Often seen creating small dirt mounds in sidewalk cracks.
Behavior. Nest under pavement, foundations, and slabs. Enter homes through foundation cracks searching for food, especially grease, sweets, and protein.
Boise Hotspots. Downtown condos, The Bench area, any home with concrete slab foundation, commercial properties with heavy pavement.
Odorous House Ants
Appearance. Tiny (1/16 to 1/8 inch), dark brown to black. When crushed, they emit a distinctive "rotten coconut" smell.
Behavior. Form massive "super colonies" with multiple queens. Love sweet foods and moisture. Extremely difficult to eliminate with DIY methods because colonies split when threatened.
