Identification
Our Lawn & Mosquito Program covers three biting pests common across Ada and Canyon Counties: mosquitos (Culex and Aedes species, plus floodwater mosquitos near the Boise River), ticks (Rocky Mountain wood ticks and American dog ticks), and fleas (often brought into yards by squirrels, raccoons, and deer).
Behavior & Habits
Mosquitos breed in standing water and are most active at dawn and dusk. In the Treasure Valley, the worst breeding sites we see on yard walk-throughs are irrigation ditches, low spots that flood after a sprinkler cycle, and wet ground along the Boise River corridor. Ticks wait on tall grass and shrubs (common along Greenbelt trails and Foothills properties) to latch onto passing hosts. Fleas survive in shaded lawn areas waiting for a host.
Health & Property Risks
Mosquitos can transmit West Nile virus and other diseases. Ticks carry Lyme disease, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, and other serious illnesses. Fleas cause allergic reactions and can transmit tapeworms to pets and humans.
