Star's Unique Pest Challenges
Star sits right where the Treasure Valley stops being suburban and starts being country. Most homes here have at least a quarter-acre, plenty have an acre or more, and the open fields, hay pastures, and horse properties along Floating Feather and Beacon Light keep the pest pressure higher than what you'd see in a tighter Boise neighborhood. If you live in Star, you're not just dealing with the bug that wandered onto your patio. You're dealing with whatever is moving in from the field next door.
That's why voles are a much bigger problem in Star than they are in central Boise. They tunnel through irrigated lawns, chew the bark off young fruit trees, and turn a freshly landscaped yard into a maze of ridges by mid-summer. Homes between Star Road and the river corridor see the worst of it. Newer subdivisions like Heron River, Saddlebrook, and Pinewood Lakes are built right on what used to be vole habitat, so the first year or two in a new build is usually when homeowners discover they have a problem.
Wasps are the other one we get a lot of calls about. Yellow jackets love to nest in the ground along pasture edges, irrigation berms, and along old fence lines. Paper wasps build under the eaves of barns, sheds, and detached garages, which Star homes have plenty of. By July most properties out here have at least one nest going somewhere, and on horse and livestock parcels you're often looking at three or four.
Then there's the rodent side. Field mice and deer mice come off the surrounding ag land every fall when the irrigation shuts off and night temperatures drop. Star's mix of older farmhouses, manufactured homes, and brand-new construction all have entry points, just different kinds. We also see ticks on horse and livestock properties, especially the brushy edges along the Boise River corridor and Eagle Island. The dog ticks pick up off pasture grass, the deer mice carry them indoors, and pretty soon a hobby farm has a real problem.
As of spring 2026, Green Guard runs Eagle every week, and Star is right next door. If you book by noon we can usually be at your Star home the same day. Initial treatment is $49 for any home size, and quarterly service starts at $119 with our free re-service guarantee. Pests come back between visits, we come back too.

“Three yellow jacket nests in the ground around our pasture in one summer. Dustin's tech found and treated all of them in one visit. We can finally let the kids run around again.”
“Mice every fall from the farm field behind us. They sealed the foundation gaps and set up quarterly. Two winters now with zero mice.”
Star Pest Control FAQ
How much does pest control cost in Star, Idaho?
Initial treatment is $49 for any home size in Star. After that, quarterly service runs $119 for homes up to 2,500 sq ft, $139 for 2,501 to 4,000 sq ft, and $159 for 4,001 to 5,500 sq ft. Properties over 5,500 sq ft or with multiple outbuildings get a custom quote. Every plan includes our free re-service guarantee between visits.
Do you service Star, Idaho the same day as Eagle?
Yes. We treat Eagle every week and Star is right next door, so if you book by noon we can usually have a tech at your Star home that same afternoon. ZIP 83669 is part of our standard service area, and we cover everything from downtown Star to Floating Feather to the Beacon Light corridor.
How do you handle voles on Star properties?
Voles need a different approach than mice because they live outside in tunnels, not in your walls. We treat the active runways with targeted baits, set up perimeter barriers around landscaped beds and fruit trees, and recommend specific lawn changes that make your yard less inviting. On bigger Star lots we focus on the irrigated zones first since that's where vole damage shows up fastest.
Can you treat horse and livestock properties in Star?
Yes. Our organic-based products are family and pet safe, and they're appropriate for properties with horses, dogs, chickens, and most livestock. We focus barrier treatments on the home and outbuildings, not pastures, and we'll work around feed storage, water troughs, and animal areas. Tell us about your animals when you book and we'll plan around them.
What pests are worst in Star during the summer?
Wasps and yellow jackets are the big complaint from June through September. Yellow jackets nest in the ground along pasture edges and irrigation berms, and paper wasps build under barn and shed eaves all summer. We also see peak ant pressure (pavement and odorous house ants), spiders moving in to escape the heat, and ticks on rural properties with brush or livestock.
Why do new construction homes in Star get pests so fast?
Star is built on what used to be hay fields and pasture, so when crews break ground they disturb established colonies of ants, voles, and ground-nesting wasps. Those displaced pests look for the nearest shelter, which is usually the new homes going up around them. We treat new builds in Heron River, Saddlebrook, and Pinewood Lakes regularly, and a pre-move-in or first-month treatment is the most effective way to stay ahead of it.
Are your treatments safe for kids and pets?
Yes. Green Guard uses organic-based, hospital-grade products. Same products you'd find in hospitals and daycares. Most treatments are dry within 30 to 60 minutes and there's no need to leave your home during service. Just clear baseboards, move pet bowls, and we handle the rest.
Does Green Guard handle wildlife or termites in Star?
No. We don't treat termites or remove wildlife (raccoons, skunks, bats, deer). For those you'll want a specialist. We do handle rodents (mice, rats, and voles), and we treat carpenter ants, which homeowners sometimes confuse with termites in older Star farmhouses.
