The nest is the easiest tell: an open-celled paper umbrella hanging from a single stalk, usually tucked under an eave, deck overhang, or porch ceiling. You can see straight up into the cells from below, which you can't with yellowjacket or bald-faced hornet nests.

Paper wasps are less aggressive than yellowjackets but they will sting hard to defend a nest, and one wasp can sting repeatedly. Colonies stay small (15 to 200 workers in a typical Boise summer), and the founding queen often starts a new nest within a few feet of last year's spot. They're useful predators of caterpillars, aphids, and other garden pests, so a nest tucked away from foot traffic is fine to leave alone.

Paper wasp stings are sharp and can cause allergic reactions, ranging from local swelling to anaphylaxis in sensitive people. They sting less often than yellowjackets unless the nest is directly bumped, but a disturbed nest near a doorway or play area can put out a dozen workers in seconds, and each one can sting multiple times. For anyone with a known wasp allergy, even a small nest is worth removing.

Are paper wasps beneficial, or should I have the nest removed?
Paper wasps are good predators of caterpillars, flies, and aphids, so a nest tucked into a back corner of the yard is usually worth leaving alone. If the nest is within 15 feet of a doorway, deck, kids' play area, or anywhere foot traffic runs past it, get it treated. By August in Boise a colony can hold 100 to 200 workers, and they will defend the nest hard if you bump it with a lawn chair or rake.
When is the best time to remove a paper wasp nest in the Treasure Valley?
Late April through early June is easiest, when the nest is the size of a quarter and only the founding queen is on it. By mid-July, Boise colonies have 30 to 100 workers and treatment has to happen at dusk. Don't wait until fall hoping cold weather kills them. Paper wasps stay active in the Valley through the first hard freeze, usually mid to late October.
Will paper wasps come back to the same spot next year?
The colony dies off after the first hard freeze, but new queens overwinter under bark and inside soffits, and they often start a new nest within a few feet of the old one the next spring.
