Identification

How to Identify Paper Wasp

Quick Answer

Paper wasps are slender wasps with long legs that dangle in flight, about 16-25mm long (roughly the length of a paperclip). Most of what we see across the Treasure Valley is the European paper wasp, with crisp yellow-and-black banding that homeowners often confuse with yellowjackets.

The nest is the easiest tell: an open-celled paper umbrella hanging from a single stalk, usually tucked under an eave, deck overhang, or porch ceiling. You can see straight up into the cells from below, which you can't with yellowjacket or bald-faced hornet nests.

Paper Wasp Behavior & Habits

Understanding how paper wasp behave helps prevent infestations

Signs You Have Paper Wasp

What homeowners spot first

  1. Umbrella-shaped paper nests under eaves
  2. Wasps hovering around outdoor light fixtures
  3. Nests attached by single stalk to horizontal surfaces
  4. Visible open hexagonal cells in nest
  5. Wasps entering holes in siding or deck boards

Paper wasps are less aggressive than yellowjackets but they will sting hard to defend a nest, and one wasp can sting repeatedly. Colonies stay small (15 to 200 workers in a typical Boise summer), and the founding queen often starts a new nest within a few feet of last year's spot. They're useful predators of caterpillars, aphids, and other garden pests, so a nest tucked away from foot traffic is fine to leave alone.

Dangers

Paper Wasp Risks & Dangers

What paper wasp can do to your health and property

Health Risks

Paper wasp stings are sharp and can cause allergic reactions, ranging from local swelling to anaphylaxis in sensitive people. They sting less often than yellowjackets unless the nest is directly bumped, but a disturbed nest near a doorway or play area can put out a dozen workers in seconds, and each one can sting multiple times. For anyone with a known wasp allergy, even a small nest is worth removing.

Property Damage

Paper wasp nests stain stucco, soffits, and bare wood with brown spotting from saliva and paper material. Old nests left in place over winter often attract carpet beetles and other secondary pests, and a nest right above a door or grill creates a daily sting risk for the household.

Paper Wasp in Boise & the Treasure Valley

Paper wasps are the most common stinging insect call we run across the Treasure Valley, with nest activity ramping up from late May and peaking from mid-July through early September. We pull the most nests off porch ceilings and deck overhangs in the Boise North End, the Bench, and the older Meridian neighborhoods between Cherry Lane and Pine, plus newer subdivisions in Eagle and Star where vinyl soffits and trampoline frames give queens easy starter spots. They reuse the same locations year after year, so if you had a nest over your front door last August, plan on checking that same eave by Memorial Day.

Our Solution

How We Eliminate Paper Wasp

Professional treatment for complete elimination

We treat paper wasp nests at dusk or after dark when the colony is back inside, using a long-reach product that knocks them down fast. After the workers are dead, we knock the nest down so a new queen can't reclaim it next spring, and we treat the surrounding eaves and overhangs to discourage reuse. Subscription customers get the nest treatment included in our $49 initial service, and our free re-service guarantee covers any callbacks between visits if new wasps show up.

Prevention

How to Prevent Paper Wasp

Steps you can take to reduce the risk of infestation

1
Walk your eaves, porch ceilings, and deck overhangs every couple of weeks from late April through June, when starter nests are the size of a quarter and easy to knock down
2
Check the underside of patio umbrellas, trampoline frames, gas grill lids, and kids' playsets before the first weekend you use them in spring
3
Seal gaps in siding, soffits, and vent screens where queens overwinter and start new nests
4
Paint or varnish bare wood under eaves and on deck rails (raw wood is a preferred nesting surface)
5
Keep outdoor trash lids tight and rinse recycling, since sugary residue draws scouts in late summer
6
Skip the hardware-store wasp spray on anything bigger than a softball and call us instead, especially within 20 feet of a doorway
FAQ

Paper Wasp Questions Answered

Common questions about identification, prevention, and treatment

Are paper wasps beneficial, or should I have the nest removed?

Paper wasps are good predators of caterpillars, flies, and aphids, so a nest tucked into a back corner of the yard is usually worth leaving alone. If the nest is within 15 feet of a doorway, deck, kids' play area, or anywhere foot traffic runs past it, get it treated. By August in Boise a colony can hold 100 to 200 workers, and they will defend the nest hard if you bump it with a lawn chair or rake.

When is the best time to remove a paper wasp nest in the Treasure Valley?

Late April through early June is easiest, when the nest is the size of a quarter and only the founding queen is on it. By mid-July, Boise colonies have 30 to 100 workers and treatment has to happen at dusk. Don't wait until fall hoping cold weather kills them. Paper wasps stay active in the Valley through the first hard freeze, usually mid to late October.

Will paper wasps come back to the same spot next year?

The colony dies off after the first hard freeze, but new queens overwinter under bark and inside soffits, and they often start a new nest within a few feet of the old one the next spring. That's why we knock down the old nest after treatment and spray the surrounding eaves. On our quarterly plan, the spring service catches new queens before they get a nest off the ground.
